About

Ben Lemberger

I am a physicist based in Eugene, Oregon. I did my PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison on quantum many-body theory and quantum error correction, then postdoctoral research in theoretical quantum optics at Aarhus University and in computational neuroscience at the University of Oregon.

I now work independently — building predictive models and data systems, and consulting on quantitative modeling and quantum computing claims.

Side projects
Shadow Codex
A free rules reference for the Shadowdark roleplaying system, built around a visual filter interface: you can stack filters to pull up exactly what you need at the table, and when one entry references another, the referenced entry automatically appears inline.

Rankverse
Ordinal rankings across dozens of media categories, aggregated and analyzed: rank correlations between items, distribution shapes, and a polarization measure that separates "everyone's fourth favorite" from "half love it, half hate it," which may average out to the same net score. A drag-and-drop interface lets a visitor submit a ranking and see a personalized comparison of where their taste diverges from or conforms to the crowd.

Published tabletop RPG adventure
An original adventure for the Shadowdark roleplaying game, a close relative of Dungeons & Dragons: it consists of a nonlinear dungeon crawl, multiple factions with conflicting goals, and open-ended challenges that require creative thinking. I authored the scenario and characters, and designed custom monsters, items, and traps, drawing on experience gained through 10 years of running my own game.
Historical documents, transcribed and retold
Two family archives formed the basis of this project: my great-uncle's diary from his time in the navy during the Pacific war, over 300 pages by the time he returned home, and several hundred more pages from German archives pertaining to my grandfather's family, mostly handwritten. For both, I used AI for a first pass of transcription and translation, then went through the output section by section by hand: fixing what the models got wrong, restoring what they dropped, adding context, making the writing sound more natural, and shaping the result into a cohesive narrative. Slow, careful work at the boundary of what frontier models can and cannot yet do on their own.
Campus-wide alternate reality game
A real-time puzzle game, designed and run twice at UW–Madison with a small team. It began with cryptic posters put up all across campus, containing the first clue: each solution then led to the next, as players unraveled the mystery. I wrote every puzzle and cipher, and solving them required finding monument markers in public spaces, drawing geometric shapes overlaid on maps of town, pulling numbers and letters from plaques in a public museum, and interacting with actors to obtain the next clue by speaking the correct code-phrases. The first year, no team got past the halfway point, so I recalibrated the difficulty and in the second year, one tenacious group managed to finish the entire thing over the course of about three weeks.
Outside of work

I run a long-standing weekly tabletop role-playing game, often in worlds and adventures of my own creation. I have a lifelong interest in strategy games of all kinds. I marched drum corps (Bluecoats 2011, front ensemble), still play some piano, and am an avid classical music listener — especially string quartets. I'm also a long-time vegetarian and love to cook from scratch, mostly Indian but also anything flavorful and spicy. My chana masala, a curry made with tomatoes, tamarind, yogurt, and chickpeas cooked fresh in a pressure cooker, is the best dish I make.

Email is the best way to reach me. If you're writing about work, a line or two on what the problem is and whether you want an assessment, a build, or ongoing advice is enough to start. I'm open to projects large and small, conventional or unusual.
